Hi, everyone! Just a quick reminder that now is the time to be starting your spring veggie crops. (I myself have started 5 flats and have more to plant!) It's such a joy to see those little seedlings break the soil surface--especially on a dark, dismal day! Good things to plant now are: Swiss Chard, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, and lettuce mixes, Kale--basically any of the cool-season and cole crops. These can also be sown directly into the soil, but I like to give them a head start inside. And, besides, it's FUN!!!
Happy planting!

Given the high price of bread at the market (both monetarily and in what they put in it!), I have been making my own bread at home for some time. Not only is it fun and satisfying to make, but YOU control what goes into it. Take a look next time you're in the bread aisle at the list of ingredients on your average loaf of bread--pretty scary how much sugar (CORN/SOY SYRUP!)is in there! I like to take a basic whole wheat bread recipe and "tweak it" by adding things like flaxseed meal, rye flour, fine-ground cereal (from Munk, of course!), oat bran, buckwheat, the list goes on and on. It's a great way to try those specialty flours that are available. I usually substitute any of the above for 2 cups of the whole wheat flour at about half a cup each or so. Just don't add too many heavy things in one batch or it won't rise as well. My standard mix is 1/2 cup flaxseed, 1/2 c. cereal, 1 c. of some specialty flour. I also substitute the white flour for white whole wheat flour, which is a little heavier but still has nutritional value. It tastes so much better than store-bought at a fraction of the cost, and is a good place to start taking control of your food supply. Buying from local sources whenever possible, of course!
If anyone has any good bread recipes to share, we'd love to hear them!
Happy baking!
